Since the figurine I intended to make was going to be standing and at least 5" tall, I didn't think it would be suitable to use just fondant or gumpaste because the weight of it would just squish the figurine into itself. To make the structure of the figurine, I used cereal treats (melted butter, marshmallows & puffed rice cereal). Cereal treats are pretty easy to shape into whatever form you want. Just make sure to compress them tightly so they hold the shape that you've formed them into. I made the head separately from the body, just squishing & rolling the cereal treats into a sphere. After forming, I used a serrated knife to smoothen out the surface so that it wouldn't be bumpy after covering in fondant.

Yummy dark chocolate fondant was used for the figurine's pants and hair. I love dark chocolate fondant! Tastes like a tootsie roll. Used a skewer running through the middle to attach the head to the body. The figurine is 99% edible. Only the glasses can't be eaten cuz they're made of wire (I couldn't roll the fondant that thin. I tried.)

Li Chin Fondant Figurine! |
The cake was 2 tiers of Devil's Food Cake, filled with dark chocolate ganache. That's 6 layers of cake & 4 layers of ganache goodness. Perfect for a chocolate lover. The birthday girl's favourite colour is green, so I went with a polka dot design with complimentary colours. I covered the cake board with the same electric green fondant as the top tier.
The top tier was accented with a white a pink fondant ribbon and a few of the fondant dots. I made some stars on skewers to stand behind the figurine as well, since she's posing in a karate chop sort of move.
The birthday girl was very pleased with her cake! And I guess she's extra happy cuz her hubby also got her that honking huge bottle of the good stuff!
Happy Birthday, Li Chin!! |
