Marzipan Pigs & Fruits

I went off on a bit of a tangent at cake class today. After making the required marzipan fruits, I decided to make my family.... in pig form!

But first, the fruits. Shaping marzipan is a lot more fun than fondant. It is a lot firmer (since it's made out of almonds & sugar!). I also got to use an airbrush for the first time. All the fruits, no matter which fruit, were airbrushed with a yellow base coat first. Guess it makes for a more natural look. My favourite were the bananas. The brown details were hand-painted after the yellow and green layers dried. The stems on the pears and apples were made from bits of cinnamon stick. The fuzzy peaches were rolled in a bit of granulated sugar to give it that "fuzzy" look. I wish everything could be made out of marzipan instead of fondant. It just tastes sooo much better!!

Marzipan Fruits (sorry for the plastic wrap)
Since I had a bit of time left, I made some pigs! One for each of the the members in my family. I thought the girls were especiallly cute with the little pink bows. The eyes are just dots of royal icing with a smidge of melted chocolate. Their curly tails were cute and fun to make. Oink Oink!

My family, in pig form.
